Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, ruled Mercia in the English Midlands from 911 until her death. Born at the height of the Viking invasions of England, she grew up in a land at war, fighting a losing battle against Danish conquerors. It is said that Æthelflæd ruled in her husband’s place for a decade after he became ill. When he died in 911, Æthelflæd became Mirena l’adige, “Lady of the Mercians”. Before her death, she had taken back a large part of England. and had more ready to surrender.
Æthelflæd was the first-ever Free to Play Legendary Commander in Rise of Kingdoms. She can only be obtained from Expedition, either as a reward for clearing a specific campaign or from the Medal Store (limited to 3 sculptures per day). She is a Leadership, Peacekeeping, and Support Commander, specializing in AoE Damage and AoE Debuff. She is best suited for group fights as it allows her to debuff multiple enemies. However, due to her lack of mobility and tankiness she is highly vulnerable in fights, not to mention that she is a high priority target.

Mixed Troops Open Field
This is the perfect build for Æthelflæd as it compliments all her skills.
From the Support Tree, we take “Rejuvenate”, it allows her and her secondary commander to spam their Active Skills more frequently. Next, “Emergency Protection” to reduce skill damage taken and 1 point in “Cage of Thorns” is enough to proc bonus damage from her Expertise Skill whenever she or her secondary uses an Active Skill.
From the Leadership tree, we take “Armed to the Teeth” and “Armored to the Teeth” to add some bonus stats whenever she has 3 unit types, it works well with her 4th Skill “Fortress of Mercia”. Finally, we take “Strategic Prowess” for some tankiness whenever she uses her Active Skill (which is quite often).
This build has everything you need on a Peacekeeper. High rage regeneration from “Rejuvenate”, additional march speed, bonus troop capacity from Fresh Recruits, heal from “Curing Chant” allows you to stay longer in the field without having to refill. “Elixir” and “Double-Edge Sword” buffs “Curing Chant” even more.
Best Pairings for Æthelflæd
There are many possible pairings for Æthelflæd, some of which work extremely well in any situation whereas others only work in specific situations. Ideally, you want to pair your Æthelflæd with a tank. If you were to pair her with another Support or another Nuker, you will be focused down relatively early. It’s not important whether you benefit from 20% Bonus Damage for mixed troops from Fortress of Mercia, what’s important is that you are hitting as many enemies as you can with your Active Skill and debuff them.
Richard provides Æthelflæd durability allowing her to debuff enemies for a longer period of time. Either of them can be Primary, although Richard Primary with full infantry army is significantly better in most cases.
Martel isn’t as durable as Richard but he is pretty close to him. With Martel, you get a bit more mobility and bonus damage.
Constantine and Æthelflæd pairing is the best pairing that you can bring to an open field fight. The amount of AoE debuff and AoE buffs you will provide is next to none. The only downside, and probably the most important to this pairing is that both Commanders are sort of like magnets. They draw a lot of attention to themselves.
