Harald Sigurdsson Commander Guide: Skills, Talent Builds, Pairs 2020

Disclaimer: This is just a first impression so I can’t really talk much about him.

Harald began a series of wars for the Danish throne. In a major naval battle at the mouth of the Nice River in 1062, he defeated the Danish king Sven II Estridsen, but he himself suffered heavy losses. In 1064 he signed an unconditional peace with Denmark. In 1066, at the head of an army, he invaded England, but was killed in a surprise attack by the British at Stamford Bridge, and his army was defeated. Harald is considered one of the most legendary Viking leaders and with his death the Viking Age ended.

Overview

Harald was released alongside Zenobia on 10.12.2020 in the Heroic Anthem Update. He is available for Kingdoms older than 310 Days and can only be obtained from The Wheel of Fortune Event for now. He is a Legendary Infantry Commander and specializes in Conquering and dealing Skill damage.

By the looks of it, even though he is a Skill Commander he deals ridiculous amounts of Normal Attack and Counterattack Damage and has two anti swarm mechanisms.

Berserker
Active
If not surrounded, troops led by this commander deal direct damage to the current target (Damage Factor 600). If surrounded, troops deal direct damage to up to 3 target troops within a circular area of effect (Damage Factor 600). Damage dealt to each target is reduced by 15% for each additional target. After using this skill, troops gain 10% increased damage for 2 seconds.

Upgrade Preview:

Direct Damage Factor: 600 700/S00 /1000 /1200
Damage Factor (Surrounded): 600/ 900/1100/1300/1500
Damage Bonus: 10% / 12/14/19% 20%

Damage Factor for a single target is mediocre at best but the Surrounded Bonus somewhat decent. Although I’d have preferred if the 20% was incorporated directly to the damage factor but after looking through his other skills it somewhat makes sense.

Viking Battle Axe
Passive
When attacking strongholds and cities, infantry units led by this commander gain 2% increased attack and whenever they take damage, they have a 10% chance to reduce damage taken by 10%. This damage reduction effect can trigger once every 5 seconds.

Upgrade Preview:

Infantry Attack Bonus: 2%/4% /6%/8%/10% Damage Taken Reduced By: 10%/ 15%/ 20%/ 25%/ 30%

Not a fan of the 2nd Skill being a Conquering Skill but it is what it is. 10% Infantry Attack isn’t much but the Damage Taken Reduction of 30% is huge, since it reduces damage from every source (skill, normal attack and counterattack).

Varangian Guard
Passive
Infantry units led by this commander gain 10% increased attack and 2% increased march speed. When this commander uses their active skill, all infantry units under their command gain 1% more attack but lose 1% defense (This effect lasts 8 seconds, and can stack up to 15 times).

Infantry Attack Increase (Per Stack): 1%/ 2%/ 3%/ 4%/ 5%
Troop Defense Decrease (Per Stack): 1%/ 2%/ 3%/ 4%/ 5%

This is a weird skill to say the least and a double edge sword. 30% Infantry Attack and March Speed are nice to have but the main highlight of this skill is the stacking Infantry Attack Increase/Defense Decrease. If I understand this correctly, every time Harald uses his Active Skill, for the next 8 secs he will gain 5% Attack and lose 5% Defense every second, so a total of 40% stat trade, and then he uses his active skill again to continue to trade stats up to 75%. In the words of Ron Simmons, “DAMN”.

Now you might be wondering 75% Increase Attack is cool but the 75% decreased defense will make him highly vulnerable to swarming. Yeah, you’re right to think that but his remaining skills takes care of that.

Stamford Bridge
Passive
When troops led by this commander are on the map and deal damage, this commander has a 5% chance to cast their active skill and grant their troops immunity to all defense reduction for 3 seconds. This skill can trigger once every 5 seconds.

Upgrade Preview:

Probability: 5% / 8% / 11%/ 15%/ 20%

Whenever you’re on the map you have a 20% Chance to use your Active Skill, I assume this Passively Active skill (I don’t know what else to call it) doesn’t require rage. So, whenever his skill goes off you’re immune to defense reduction for 3 secs and it has a cooldown of 5 secs. So basically, this skill removes the debuff from Varangian Guard and defense reduction from the enemy if any for the next 3 secs, and you’re left with only 75% (up to) Normal Attack increase. You’re still vulnerable when this skill is on cooldown though.

Valhalla
New Skill
Counterattack damage dealt on the map is increased by 20%. If surrounded, counterattack damage dealt will be further increased (Bonus Damage = Number of surrounding enemies X 2%, with an upper limit of 10 surrounding enemies).

This skill should be able to deal with enemies that surround you. 20% Base counterattack and another Bonus Counterattack depending on the number of enemies surrounding you up to 20%. This gives me a general idea on who to pair him with.
