Leonidas I was a warrior king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, and the 17th of the Agiad line; a dynasty which claimed descent from the mythological demigod Heracles and Cadmus. He was the husband of Gorgo, the daughter of Cleomenes I of Sparta. Leonidas had a notable participation in the Second Persian War, where he led the allied Greek forces to a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) while attempting to defend the pass from the invading Persian army; he entered myth as the leader of the 300 Spartans.

Overview

Leonidas was one of the most requested characters in Rise of Kingdoms and late last year he was finally added to the game. He is a Legendary commander and can be acquired from The Mightiest Governor Event and later via the Card King event.

Leonidas, unlike his counterpart Guan Yu, is a highly Defensive Infantry commander while still dealing decent amount of damage. Guan’s and Leo’s skills are designed in a way that enables each other very well, more on that later. If you are someone looking for a hard-hitting tank then Leonidas is for you.

Leonidas Skills

King of Sparta
King of Sparta
Active Skill
Rage Requirement: 1000
Increases the health of troops led by Leonidas I for 3 seconds. Deals damage to up to 3 targets a fan-shaped area. Targets under the effects of Silence or Attack Reduction will take an additional 50% damage.
Upgrade Preview:
Health Bonus: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%
Direct Damage Factor: 200 / 300 / 400 / 500 / 600

I’ll admit that the damage factor on this skill is pretty low but 30% Health increase for Infantry is quite significant. This skill deals bonus damage when the target is silenced, increasing the Damage Factor to 900.

Three Hundred Spartans

Passive Skill
When the army led by this commander contains only infantry units, increases defense, and increases the speed of rage gained.
Upgrade Preview:
Defense Bonus: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30
Speed of Rage Gained: 5% / 7% / 9% / 12% / 15%

30% Defense Bonus is amazing for a Tank and the Rage Regeneration Speed is just a cheery on top of it.

Honorable Sacrifice
Honorable Sacrifice
Passive Skill
When the army led by this commander has been reduced to less than 50% strength, there is a chance to gain a shield when attacked that lasts for 3 seconds. While the shield lasts, increase the attack of his own infantry troops by 3%.
Upgrade Preview:
Shield (Self): 600 / 650 / 700 / 750 / 800
Attack Bonus: 3% / 6% / 9% / 12% / 15%

This is a decent skill, however the only downside to this skill is that it requires you to be below 50%. In a rally situation this skill is great, however in the open field, it’s kinda lackluster. You wouldn’t want to continue fighting when you’re below 50% in the open field, instead you should try to retreat.

Son of the Lion

Passive Skill
While on the map, Leonidas I’s attack has a 25% chance to increase all damage dealt by his own troops, lasts for 5 seconds and stacks up to 4 times.
Upgrade Preview:
Damage Bonus: 5% / 6% / 7% / 8% / 10%

This skill can further buff your Damage up to 40%, this includes all sources of damage. i.e Normal Attack, Counterattack and Skill Damage. Both Primary and Secondary commander enjoys this buff.

Battle of Thermopylae
Battle of Thermopylae
New Skill: Passive Skill
When the army led by this commander has been reduced to less than 10% strength, increase all damage dealt by 400% and increase damage reduction by 50%, lasts for 10 seconds. This effect can trigger only once per hour after the army has left the city.

I have mixed feelings about this Expertise. In a duel, if you and your enemy are both at 10% strength or close to it, then you’ll notice the impact of this Expertise but if you’re getting swarmed then it won’t make a difference anyway. The bigger question is why would anyone willing to stay in the open field till they are below 10%, they should have retreated and refreshed long ago.

When Leonidas is leading a rally this Skill will deal significant damage to the defenders even if it lasts for only 10 secs, assuming of course the rally is constantly reinforced.

Leonidas Best Talent Build

Leonidas I (35-0-39)

Leonidas is a better secondary when paired with most other Infantry Commanders, but if you want to sneak in a high DPS commander like Yi Seong-Gye behind a tanky commander like Leonidas then this is the build that you want to go for.

Best Talents for Leonidas:

  • Testudo Formation
  • Loose Formation
  • Hold the Line
  • Strong of Body
  • Iron Spear
  • Undying Fury

The above Talents are all mandatory for Leonidas, everything else if personal preference. If you’re looking for more march then go for Fleet of Foot else go for Medicinal Supplies to for more tankiness.

Out of all the above Commanders, Guan Yu works the best with Leonidas. Most of their Skills are designed in a way to synergize with each other.
