Taejo of Joseon, born Yi Seong-Gye, was the founder and the first king of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea and the main figure in overthrowing the Goryeo Dynasty. Yi Seong-Gye joined the Goryeo army and gained power and respect during the late 1370s and early 1380s by pushing Mongol remnants off the peninsula and also by repelling well-organized Japanese pirates in a series of successful engagements. He declared a new dynasty in 1392-1393 under the name of Joseon, thereby reviving an older state, also known as Joseon, that was, legendarily, established nearly three thousand years previously and renamed the county the “Kingdom of Great Joseon”. Yi Seong-Gye abdicated in 1308 during the strife between his son and died on May 23, 1408 I Changdeok Palace.

Overview

Yi Seong-Gye or YSG is a Legendary Commander in Rise of Kingdoms. His talents include Archer, Garrison, and Skill but because of how his skill works you can use him as a secondary to almost any Commander in the game, except Mobility and Integration Commanders and Attila. That makes him the most versatile and probably the best Commander in the game. He can be obtained via The Wheel of Fortune and later via The Card King event. As of Update 1.0.38: “Anniversary Festival”, both Yi Seong-Gye and Richard I are available in the Daily Special Offers.

Why Yi Seong-Gye is the Best Commander?

  • Deals Circular AoE Damage to up to 5 targets
  • 50% Active Skill Damage boost for both himself and the other commander.
  • Only 1 Archer Specific Skill and that too partially.
  • Can be used in almost every game mode with extremely good results.
  • First Generation commander but has withstood the test of time for 2 years now.

Yi Seong-Gye Skills

Rain of Arrows
Rain of Arrows
Active Skill
Rage Requirement: 1000
Damages up to 5 enemy troops in a fan-shaped area. Damage dealt to each target is reduced by 15% for each additional target.
Upgrade Preview:
Direct Damage Factor: 600 / 800 / 1000 / 1200 / 1400

1400 damage factor to 5 targets is amazing even with the 15% damage reduction for each additional target. His Expertise Skill however takes this skill and amplifies it to a degree that was unrivaled till Theodora was released but even so, YSG is the better of the two for most players.

Art of Archery
Art of Archery
Passive Skill
Troops led by this commander have a 10% chance to gain extra rage for each normal attack. For the next 3 seconds, all archer units led by this commander gain increased attack.
Upgrade Preview:
Rage Restored: 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 / 100
Archer Attack Bonus: 50% / 60 % / 70% / 80% / 100%

100% Archer Attack for 3 secs and 100 Rage Regen is pretty good. The Rage Restoration part of this skill doesn’t require you to have Archers in your march. This is why YSG is used with Non-Archer Commanders so often, as none of his Skill actually require that you have Archers, sure you are missing out on the 100% Attack but you’ll do just fine without it as YSG’s main strength lies in his Expertise which works regardless of the troop type or commander that you use him with.

Joseon Dynasty
Joseon Dynasty
Passive Skill
While this commander is leading the garrison of your own city, garrison troops and Watchtower gain increased attack.
Upgrade Preview:
Garrison/Watchtower Attack Bonus: 1% / 2% / 3% / 4% / 5%

This only works when YSG is garrisoning a City, so it’s useless in most cases.

Destiny
Destiny
Passive Skill
Troops led by this commander gain increased skill damage.
Upgrade Preview:
Active Skill Damage Bonus: 20% / 25% / 30% / 40% / 50%

This skill will increase the Active Skill Damage for both Primary and Secondary commanders by 50%.

Arrow Storm
Arrow Storm
Enhanced: Rain of Arrows
Damages up to 5 enemy troops in a circular area (Damage Factor 1700). Damage dealt to each target is reduced by 15% for each additional target.

AoE Skill that hits up to 5 targets is good but an AoE Skill that deals damage in Circular Area is even better. This Expertise allows you to farm Barbarians more efficiently and easily, it’s good in Sunset Canyon, Ian’s Ballad, Garrison, Ceroli Crisis, Open Field fights and more.

Best Talents for YSG

In most cases, you want to hide the fact that you have a YSG in your march since he is a very high priority target. So, YSG is better used as a secondary but if you are someone who doesn’t mind being the center then you can use him as Primary.

Best Pairings for YSG

Like I already mentioned, YSG can be paired with almost any Legendary commander depending on the situation and still produce extremely good results. So, I am listing only 3 Best Commanders for each category and 1 of each Troop Type i.e 1 Infantry, 1 Cavalry, and 1 Archer Commander per list.

Garrison

Charles Martel
Charles Martel
Charles Martel and YSG have proved to be a formidable duo when defending a Garrison, although the pair is not as popular as it used to be, they will serve you for a long time before it finally goes out of meta.
Artemisia I
Artemisia I
This pair was short-lived but they made a huge impact during their time. Dedicated Garrison commanders somewhat replaced this duo.

Yi Sun-Shin
YSS and Theodora are the meta commanders for defending a Garrison but YSG is a suitable replacement for Theodora, YSG more damage oriented and Theodora more defensive but they pretty much serve the same role i.e AoE control.

Open Field

Richard I
Richard I
Richard is the most durable Commander in the game and YSG is the highest damage dealer, pair them up together in the open field and you’ve got yourself an unkillable (kinda) march that deals ridiculous AoE damage.
Ramesses II
Ramesses II
Fellow Archer Commander, Ramesses is relatively durable for an Archer commander and provides multiple utilities like disabling Healing, defense reduction, etc.
Saladin
Saladin
Genghis and YSG together are way better than Saladin and YSG for most cases, but in the open field, I’d not recommend pairing two high priority targets together. Saladin is durable because of his skills and talents and allows YSG to survive longer and dish out a high amount of damage for a longer period of time.

Rally

Genghis Khan
Genghis Khan
Khan deals high single target damage and has multiple ways to manipulate rage. YSG provides him with AoE control, 50% Bonus Skill Damage and more rage regeneration. Together these two deals unrivalled skill damage but the only problem is that they die fairly quickly which is why they are not suited for the open field but in a constantly reinforced rally, they are a huge threat.
Alexander the Great
Alexander
Alex is durable not as much as someone like Richard but he also deals a good amount of damage. The pair was almost unstoppable during KvK Season 2.
Ramesses II
Ramesses II
Fellow Archer Commander, Ramesses is relatively durable for an Archer commander and provides multiple utilities like disabling Healing, defense reduction, etc.
